Case 4, Thoracic Anomaly or Pathology         (Return to Case List)
These films come from an article published in the New York Times on April 27, 2020. The article reported on the successful treatment of a severely ill COVID-19 patient. I put these radiographs on the web site because the film in the middle illustrates a pneumonia so extensive that there is a silhouette sign for the entire heart. That is, one cannot see either the left or right border of the heart because everywhere it lies up against fluid-filled lung. If you want to review the concept of silhouetting, go to the lecture on Radiology of the Thorax.
